Description

This Nordic sword has a leather bound spiral grip. The crossguard is inlayed with geometric designs thought to represent standards carried into battle. The pommel's oval disc shape is created to represent the distinctiveness of the early Nordic style of sword making. Beginning in the 9th century Vikings raided wildly in Western Europe with this style of sword.

The Nordic sword also called the Norman Sword was used by the Normans. The Normans also called Northmen or Norsemen were Scandinavian Vikings that raided European settlements during the 8th century. The French King, Charles the Simple, gave the Normans land in hopes that they would stop attacking France. This new Norman land became known as Northmannia or land of the Northmen, which later became Normandy. The Normans were eventually converted to Christianity and adopted Frankish cavalry warfare. The Nordic sword frequently appears in the Bayeux Tapestry an embroidery that depict the Norman's conquest. The Nordic sword has a wheel pommel and a straight guard or quillons to protect the hand.
