Description

Norman shields are designed to cover a substantial amount of the body. At the time of the first crusades and for most of the next hundred years or so after, many knights still fought on foot, so these body length or tower shields appeared to give the best protection. These medieval shields provided a practical defense against contemporary archers.

While it has appeared on countless European coats of arms, the fleur-de-lis is particularly associated with the French monarchy. It is an enduring symbol of France, but, being regarded most notably as the emblem of the monarchy.
