Description

Norman shields are designed to cover a substantial amount of the body. At the time of the first crusades and for most of the next hundred years or so after, many knights still fought on foot, so these body length or tower shields appeared to give the best protection. These medieval shields provided a practical defense against contemporary archers.

At the time of the Norman Conquest of England, modern heraldry had not yet been developed. The knights in the Bayeux Tapestry carry shields, but there appears to have been no system of hereditary coats of arms. The beginnings of modern heraldic structure were in place, but would not become standard until the middle of the twelfth century.

Marto is a skilled maker of Suits of Armor, Shields, & Small Collectibles (Martespa).
