The Traveller’s Boon – The All-Important Cloak

If you are a fan of LARPing or of historical clothing recreations in general, then one of the most versatile and important garments to find is a decent cloak. While you could stick a pin in a blanket and call it a day, that wouldn’t be stylish or historically accurate. Nor would it keep you warm and dry, not like a proper cloak.

Instead, let’s look at our cloak with shoulder cape and see how it’s done. This cloak works well for a character with almost any background, whether they’re based in medieval history or you prefer a more fantasy-leaning character. The colour options are either tan brown or charcoal. However, while the classic design of this cloak will work well with many different styles, this doesn’t make it bland.

The cloak itself is handmade using cotton fabric, so each piece will be slightly unique. It is made with a slit up each side, freeing your arms without forcing you to open the cloak. There is also a slit up the back, so that the cloak is sure to fit most wearers comfortably. Finally, it fastens at the front with a single button. While this cloak is designed for fashion, it will also serve to protect you and your other clothing from the weather.

Attached to the main body of the cloak is a short cape which covers the shoulders and has a high-necked collar. This cape both helps the design of the cloak to stand out and aims to keep you warm.

As this is a handmade item, it needs to be maintained with a little care. So, hand wash it if you can and avoid using the dryer. If you need to iron your cloak, use a low setting.

Cloaks and Capes – What is the Difference?

It’s the question that almost nobody has ever asked… Until now. The two terms are often used interchangeably, describing a sleeveless garment designed to go over the rest of the clothing and which fastened at the front.

However, while both the cloak and the cape can be full length, a cape can also often refer to a shorter piece of clothing. We can see an example here, as the “cape” part of our product only reaches the shoulders, with the “cloak” being the part of the garment that actually covers the rest of the body.

However, even a full-length cape isn’t necessarily the same thing as a cloak. A cape will generally cover the shoulders and the back, but the front of the body is largely unprotected. Think about superheroes who wear capes, they’re usually full length, but they are also almost always thrown over the shoulders of our brave hero.

The cloak, on the other hand, is often designed to also encompass the arms and front of the wearer. So, while the cape is great for dramatically fluttering in the wind, the cloak is better at keeping you warm. Of course, this is all semantics. If you call a cape a cloak, people are going to know what you mean.
