(About): A Historically-Inspired, Fully-Functional Latex-Free Roleplay Battle Sword

Our Berserker LARP Sword is named for the fiercest warriors of Early Medieval Europe – the Norse berserkers. It is full of historical influences from the Norse age. The blade is modelled on a Type X Carolingian sword, the prime weapon of the Viking Age. These straight-edged swords had wide fullers and distal tapers to turn them into agile, skilled weapons. It is colored with a shining silver finish. The hilt is a brass-style Viking design: it has a narrow cross-guard with simple engraving, a simulated leather hand-grip, and a three-lobed pommel.

Mytholon’s master makers have crafted the Berserker LARP Sword with a solid fiberglass core, the gold-standard for functional LARP swords. The blade is a latex-free polyurethane foam, and the hilt is cast PU plastic. It is a fairly hard sword, and so should only be used for full-contact on armored opponents. It’s a wonderfully versatile weapon that would make a fantastic LARP Viking weapon, but would equally well suit any High Medieval setting as well.

The Complexities of Going Berserk

The Viking berserkers derive their name from the Old Norse words for ‘bear-shirt’ – literally, those who took on the aspect of a bear. These terrifying drengr (suicidally reckless warriors) have a complex position in Viking society. The Viking sagas clearly describe these warriors as feared by common folk, and it appears that they were shunned by settled society, living in their own bands as roving wanderers. But at the same time, their use and value as devastating warriors was also held in awe: the semi-historical first King of Norway Harald Fairhair is described as using a vanguard of berserker warriors in several of his key battles.

It seems that berserkers were both shunned and acknowledged as a necessary evil in a society which saw ritual violence as a political and religious necessity. Think about this complexity whilst constructing your character. You could include some of our authentic history Viking jewellery as a nod to the status of berserkers, who were esteemed, but who carried their wealth with them.
