Spirit of the Alpha Sword
Man and Beast as One: The Spirit of the Alpha
The sword is often considered one of the most recognisable weapons of Medieval Europe, as well as many fantasy works. Fantasy swords can include iconic blades ripped straight from specific stories, or swords which aren’t associated with a particular work of fiction, but rather evoke a certain theme.
For example, this sword is clearly themed around the wolf. It is an undeniably attractive weapon, with a richly detailed handle and scabbard, making it a wonderful display piece. If you want a sword for a LARP or Cosplay outfit, then this weapon will help to characterise your warrior.
The sword itself is similar to an arming sword, with a double-edged straight blade. Where it really stands out is in the design of the handle and scabbard. The pommel has a wolf head design. The grip is curved to match the shape of your hand, and the black material has a decorative metal wire spiralling down to the crossguard.
The centre of the crossguard depicts the snarling Alpha Wolf, while the two arms are intricately carved to show scenes of the wolf calling to his pack. The scabbard suits the handle well, as it is largely constructed with black material to match the grip, but also features stunning wolf designs.
The theme here is clear, the Spirit of the Alpha is with whoever wields this blade.
Wolves in Folklore and Fantasy
Historically, wolves had an odd reputation. They were feared, admired, hated, and respected, all at once. In the British Isles, wolves have been hunted to extinction, and other countries have had similar results.
This reputation is also seen in folklore and fantasy. In Norse mythology, for example, the great wolf Fenrir was a symbol of complete chaos, who devoured everything. However, they also associated wolves with warriors, and Odin had two loyal wolf companions.
Wolves in folklore seem to vary from wild, fierce beasts who are a severe threat to humans, or loyal and noble animals who might even raise human children (Romulus and Remus, or Mowgli).
Fantasy sees a similar pattern. Wolves are sometimes a standard antagonistic force, a wild beast for our hero to smite. Video games love pitting wolves against the player. However, wolf companions are also common fixtures, like Nighteyes from Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings.
Simply put, wolves are fantastically versatile creatures for fiction and can fill any role.
