Thorleif, Icelandic Viking Sword
(About): A Stress-Tested Combat Sword from the Frozen North
Our Thorleif Icelandic Viking Sword is a brilliantly authentic Viking Age sword, made safe for use in stage fighting. It is a magnificent weapon, rich with the heritage of the world’s oldest democracy, that combines top-notch historical design with modern battle-ready construction.
Peerless Historical Design
The blade of our Thorleif Icelandic Viking Sword conforms to Type X – these fine slashing swords had straight, parallel edges for the longest possible length of cutting surface, and the shallow point meant that a considerable amount of the weight of the sword remained distributed toward the tip. Whilst this meant they were heftier to wield, it gave them an enormous amount of power. Our Icelandic Viking sword reproduction uses some of the tricks that Viking Age blade smiths used themselves to create more agile weapons, such as distal tapering, in which the blade gets thinner in cross-section from forte to point, and a substantial fuller to reduce the weight of the blade. The hilt of our Thorleif sword is a classic of Viking design: it features a reasonably broad but authentic cross-guard to offer excellent protection to the hands. The handgrip is covered in a textured leather tread for a solid grip surface during combat in gloves, gauntlets or bare hands. The pommel is a rock solid ‘five-lobe’ type, carefully reproduced from the Viking swords in the middle Viking Period around the 10th century CE.
A Sword Made for War
Mytholon’s expert makers have made this sword from high-grade spring steel, a hard carbon steel developed for punishing tasks in the automotive industry. It is a fantastic choice for stage swords that need to be able to take a thrashing. The blade is finished with a rebated (blunt) 2mm edge. Many inferior stage weapons will be shipped to the customer untested – this means you will receive a pristine blade, but one of uncertain quality. Every sword that Mytholon makes, it tests: you may well see the proof of this in some minor nicks to the edge of the sword, but this means that it is the victor of vigorous testing before it even gets to your hand. It meets the rigorous standards required for safe re-enactment and stage fighting when used responsibly.
It’d be the perfect choice for a re-enactor looking to engage in staged full-contact combat. But it could also be the secret weapon of your roleplaying group. We at Medieval Ware urge you to use common sense and practise scrupulous safety when using our weapons – but what would enhance your immersion more than the chance to fight, steel on steel? For an even more immersive roleplaying experience, you could pair our Icelandic Viking Sword with our authentic Norse reproduction clothing, and truly inhabit the role of a fierce Viking warrior.
(Curiosity): Iceland – The Oldest Democracy
The volcanic island of Iceland, out in the Atlantic far to the north-west of Norway, was settled by Norwegian colonists around the 870s CE, and their parliament – called the Althing – remains one of the oldest democratic institutions in the world. Our Thorleif Icelandic Viking Sword stands in this proud egalitarian warrior lineage.
