Guarding Even a Glancing Blow: The Dragon Tassets (also known as “Dragomir”)

Tassets, otherwise known as an ‘armor belt’, are designed to protect the upper legs of the wearer which aren’t quite covered by the other leg protection. This particular example has a triple tasset design, which means that it covers both the thighs and the groin area of the wearer.

The design features two sets of seven armor plates covering the upper thighs, as well a central set of three plates covering the groin area. All in all, this adds up to seventeen separate metal plates that make up these tassets.

Each plate is shaped to form an interlocking design, allowing for both increased range of motion and has a fantastic effect that imitates a dragon’s scales. This effect is emphasised by the embossed curved lines that decorate every plate.

These plates are each riveted to metal straps which hold them together and join up to the leather belt. They are attached to the belt by loops that slide along the belt, allowing you to adjust them as well as remove them completely if you’re so inclined. This may be helpful when maintaining this armor piece.

This belt is made of sturdy leather and features many belt holes, making it easily adjustable to fit most wearers. In addition to the leather straps attaching the metal plates to the belt, there are also two straps which can attach to the Dragon Leg Guards, a matching part of the entire suit of armor that are sold separately.

On the note of an entire suit of armor, if this is what you’re going for, it might be an idea to buy armor pieces from the same set. This will mean that each piece will fit seamlessly with the next. This is true whether you’re after a suit of armor to display, or something truly impressive to wear at either a fantasy LARP event or while cosplaying.

Knights in Shining Armor Verses the Mighty Dragons of Old

One of the most classic tropes of fantasy is the heroic knight in shining armor facing up against a fearsome dragon. Usually, this was to rescue a fair maiden who was set up to be dragon food or occasionally to claim the vast treasures found in the Dragon’s lair. This tradition likely originated from the tales of Saint George and the Dragon.

The legend follows that very traditional story, where a beautiful princess was offered up to a dragon in an attempt to save a city from its venom. Saint George happened to turn up and chatted to the princess, refusing to leave her side. When the dragon arrived, he made the sign of the cross, then charged it with his horse and lance.

After wounding the dragon, George used the princess’s girdle to bind the beast and lead it into the city. Once everyone had converted to Christianity, he killed the dragon. Shortly after this, disease curing water began to flow in the city, which was nice.

In modern fantasy, dragons aren’t always evil, nor are they dumb beasts. They can also be intelligent, noble, or completely alien to humanity. They are normally ancient and immensely powerful, and it is never wise to get on their bad side. Some things never change.
