The Archer’s Boon: Medieval Suede Gloves
Whether you are attending an archery event, or simply want to look like a medieval archer or roguish character for reenactment or LARPing purposes, one of these gloves would be perfect for you. They would work well for both historical and fantasy events.
These handmade gloves are made of either black or brown suede, so they go well with most outfits. They are available for either the right hand or left hand, depending on your dominant hand.
Each glove has an opening for the pinkie and thumb, which means that they are both functional as an archer’s glove, and very distinctive in design. The openings are lined with leather. The glove itself has an adjustable strap around the wrist, so you can tighten or loosen the fit as you desire.
The Odd Design of the Archer’s Glove: Why Three Fingers?
The most obvious features of this glove are the openings at the pinkie and thumb. These openings mark the glove as being designed specifically for an archer or bow-hunter. Of course, an archer could also wear ordinary gloves, but why would they wear a glove with this design in particular?
Despite what you may think, it’s not because their pinkie and thumb somehow get much hotter than the rest of their hand. Nor is it just to make it look more interesting. No, this design is deliberate and practical.
Let’s think for a moment about how someone would use a bow. Usually, they would use the middle three fingers to draw the bowstring taut, then they’d release the string and allow the arrow to fly at the target. A skilled archer would repeat this motion many times.
Over time, the bowstring can chafe the three fingers used to draw it and can even injure the archer’s fingers, making it difficult for the archer to continue loosing arrows. Because of this, gloves were designed to protect these three fingers. This is also why the three-fingered gloves are only worn on one hand, because the archer would use the same hand to draw the bowstring every time.
