In the Dark of the Night: Leather Gloves
These gloves are ideal for a fantasy outfit, whether for cosplay, or fantasy LARPing, or whatever your needs. They are handmade from sheep leather, which is soft and flexible, making it a fantastic material for comfortable gloves.
The gloves themselves are fingerless, as you’d expect. They reach from the fingers up the forearm, almost to the elbow. The outside of the glove is decorated with stitching, which gives it a pleated look. The glove is fastened by lacing on the inside of the arm, which stretches from the wrist to the elbow.
The glove can be worn either over the sleeve, to show off the whole thing, or you can wear it underneath the outer layer. Obviously, they do look great, but these leather gloves are also excellent at keeping the wearer warm. As they are handmade, each glove may vary slightly, but the design is identical.
Bandits and Robbers: Not Just a Thing of Fantasy
The type of character to wear these gloves could well be a rogue or bandit. We associate these characters primarily with fantasy, but there is a historical basis behind them.
For example, many of us are familiar with the story of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the friendly bandits of Sherwood Forest led by Robin Loxley, an outlaw noble. Interestingly, this English legend shared a suspicious number of similarities with a 14th century band called the Coterel Gang.
Like the Merry Men, the Coterel Gang were based in Nottinghamshire, and hid amongst the heavily wooded areas. You know, like Sherwood Forest. The leaders, the Coterel family, were gentlemen, much like Robin Loxley. If that wasn’t enough, the Coterel Gang were even popular with most of the people in their area, including the church community.
We don’t know how much the tale of Robin Hood drew from the Coterel Gang, but it’s fair to say that, while heavily romanticised, these groups of bandits did roam Europe during the more tumultuous periods of the Middle Ages.
